The limiting factor is detonation, no? Any mods that might have a significant effect that would not be obvious (h2o or alky injection) I am aware of the general guideline nature of the limits prescribed, but I'm just talking about generalities. Assuming you wanted to build a setup for >17:1 effective compression without adding another fluid to the mix, what would the most effective methods be?

I'm guessing anything you can do to lower the temperature of the intake charge, combustion chamber, or incoming fuel would be a good way to start.
